Kate Johnson

Born in New Orleans, Kate left for New York at age 9 and spent 8 years there, coming to Texas to attend Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. She then transferred to St. Thomas in Houston, majoring in psychology and history.

Kate married Bill Johnson in 1981 and moved to Halifax Ranch outside Kyle. They have two daughters, Lucy and Katherine. The Johnson’s have been active and financially supportive of many civic and historical projects in Hays County, which include:

  • Built the Kyle Library
  • Built the Thrift Shop for the Library
  • Restored the Katherine Anne Porter House in Kyle (1 of 4 National Literary Landmarks in Texas)
  • Restored the Winters/Wimberley House in Wimberley
  • Built the Research Center at the Winters/Wimberley House
  • Moved the Kyle Railroad Depot back to its original location
  • Made the Depot ready for restoration
  • Built the Burdine Johnson Theater at Jack C. Hays High School
  • Planted all of the trees at the Jack C. Hays High School location
  • Built tennis courts at Jack C. Hays High School
  • Provide Kodaly music teacher training at Texas State University for the music department of HISD schools.
  • Producer of Captain Jack, The Story of John Coffee Hays, an educational documentary on the life of Jack Hays for distribution to all schools and libraries in Hays County

Kate is a long time active supporter and the current chair of the Hays County Historical Commission, a job she has held during three appointments by the Hays Commissioners Court. As chair, she has ensured the Commission holds regular meetings at historic sites throughout the county and seen to it that these sites are preserved for future generations. She has been very active in educational programs and promoting oral histories about life in Hays County.
