Tom Searcy
Tom Searcy retired in 1999 following a successful career spanning 38 years. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 1961, Tom worked as a sales associate for the Ward School Bus Manufacturing Company before opening Searcy Bus Sales and Searcy GMC Trucks, Inc. in Austin, a Texas distributorship for Ward School Buses and GMC truck dealership. In 1980, Tom sold the GMC dealership and established Texas Bus Center, Inc. for the distribution of Am Tran Buses (the successor of Ward School Bus). Tom also owned Appliance Distributors, Inc. in Austin from 1983 until 1988 when he liquidated that company and focused on the bus distributorship until its sale in 1999.
Born in Laredo, Tom was raised on a ranch in Live Oak County. He moved to Austin to attend UT in 1956 after graduating from Beeville High School. Tom and Joan Brown Searcy celebrated a marriage milestone on their 50th wedding anniversary this past January. Tom and Joan’s four children all live in Austin with their families, allowing frequent access to their nine grandchildren.
The Searcy’s moved to Kyle in 1989 and Tom enjoys his “semi-retirement” ranching, and keeping up with business interests. Tom and Joan are active with the Kyle Area Senior Zone and Meals on Wheels. They are valued volunteers at Seton Medical Center Hays at least three days every week. When the Searcy’s take a break from their busy retirement, they enjoy UT football and travelling, with frequent trips to Colorado. Tom is an avid hunter and fisherman.
“Trying retirement as a lifestyle became boring very quickly. The Central Texas area has been a wonderful place to be in business and raise a family. I feel that opportunities afforded me should and could be paid back by volunteering for a community service. Seton Medical Center Hays is a perfect fit for my vision of what I could offer as a volunteer. As a Trustee on the Seton Hays Foundation Board, I hope to offer experience and counsel in making SMCH even more of a landmark business in Hays County.” - Tom Searcy
